Civilization and its Discontents: The New Post-Civilization Hunter Gatherers

Peter Chidiac will make a presentation and guide discussion

This will be an informal discussion accompanied by snacks and BYO drinks (glasses provided). You do not have to be a ParraCAN member to take part in the seminarty. RSVP by 16 September.

Peter’ peek at the afternoon’s presentation and discussion:

“What lies at the roots of our global ills, our disastrous ecological breakdowns, our financial meltdowns and our probable pending extinction?

No, it’s not because of greedy human nature, or turning away from God, or having corrupt or ineffective leadership.

The problem is much deeper than this and it is no one’s fault! I call it Surplus. It’s about how the Neolithic (Agricultural) revolution radically altered out normal way of life – hunting and gathering.

The problem was that we became civilized. That’s when we started falling from grace, Surplus combines with human nature, and specifically, with what is known as Sociobiology as male/male competition to deliver us into the ills we are experiencing now.

It is a long complex story, but I’ll do my best to give you a sense of what happened. Your thoughts and comments will be important to the discussion.

What about a way out of the morass? I propose an approach, which I call Artificial Scarcity. It is basically a return to hunter/gatherer socicultural norms rather than Stone Age technology. That is also a very long story but it may stir up some lateral thinking and vigorous discussion.”

Please let us know if you can attend a.s.a.p, but before 17 September
