Earth Hour : Sharing in the dark

Parramatta will commemorate the eighth world wide Earth Hour event, on the 29th March, when participents will turn off their non-essential lights from 8:30 spm to 9:30 pm local time. The idea was started by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and was first implemented as a lights-off event in Sydney in 2007, after Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore agreed to back the event. The number of global participants has since grow each year. Participents at local events share the experience of darkness after lights out, and increase their awareness of environmental issues such as climate change. The local WWF have sought the cooperation of the Parramatta Council to share its best resources to host an event. Offers of availability of council venues and resources for reasonable costs were discussed over a few months in negotiations with Council staff.  Unfortunately the lord mayor of Parramatta, John Chedid, and other Liberal members of the council have voted against the proposal along political lines. Undetterred by this setback, the Parramatta climate action network group ParraCAN, will be organizing a local event for Parramatta, in collaboration with WWF, and would still welcome participation and assistance from the members of the Parramatta City Council
